Doug Gilbert
Doug Gilbert, Yodan, began his karate practice as a student at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. He continued to practice at Pitt and augmented his training at Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University. Doug received his Shodan and Nidan from Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima after 27 special trainings and his Sandan from Mr. Sadaharu Honda at the Grove City, PA dojo. Mr. Honda awarded Doug the rank of Yodan (fourth degree Black Belt) in May 2025, at the Elkins dojo in Elkins, WV.
In 1993, Doug visited Waseda University in Japan to train with their karate club. Mr. Honda originally trained at Waseda and became their karate club captain. Doug was honored to have trained at Waseda University again in June 2025, accompanied by Mr. Honda and other Mumon Karate senior leaders during our pursuit of Budo tour. During the tour our group practiced with masters from multiple martial arts, all with a focus on budo.
Currently Doug is the chief instructor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He serves as one of two principal instructors at the CMU club. Special practices at CMU include other high level guest instructors to ensure a well rounded exposure to Mumon's Budo karate principles and more advanced karate training.
